Annotation: In our research, we are found out a decision for design requirements for high-performance gearing, using a method of calculation power losses in spur gears for a wide range of geometric parameters and its operating conditions. The coefficient of efficiency’s (COE) dependence on the dimensions of a spur gear, module, gear ratio, circumferential speed at the pitch diameter and load is shown here. «Carpet diagrams» were used to illustrate the application of the proposed method. It has been established that the maximum efficiency is higher for fine-module gears with large diameters of the pitch circle. Idling losses account for a significant proportion of the total power loss in gearing. The results of calculating the efficiency factor (COE) by the above method for estimating power losses at one point of the engagement line with an accuracy of 0.1% coincide with the results of experiments conducted by Anderson and Leventhal. The only exception is the case of weak loading at high circumferential speeds (40 m/s), when the absence of a temperature correction factor limiting the thickness of the elastohydrodynamic film leads to an increase in the error up to 1%.

Keywords: gear drive, efficiency, modulus, circumferential speed, dividing diameter.
