Annotation: The authors of the article present a compositional analysis of projects of inventor, engineer V.G. Shukhov and architect K.S. Melnikov (both lived in early XX century), noting the influence of engineering design on architectural aesthetics in the era of modernism. The authors considers study of well-known volumetric-spatial compositions, as an analysis of the objective development of compositional form over time. The authors are thinking that the study of the formal sphere of heritage with universal compositional laws and means, analysis and recording of world-class examples in schematic graphics, makes it possible to develop taste, compositional vision and thinking. The researchers suggest that the study of the formal (compositional) sphere of the heritage of the classics of modern times and past eras allows us to see the movement of architecture, as a form of fine art, into the bosom of design. The authors of the article believe that the study of compositional structures in architectural products allows you to build a path to work on your own project, avoiding mistakes and disappointments. A well-known architectural monument is considered as a compositional organism in which a certain balance manifests itself - the relationship between the definitions of “form” and “content”. Defining the formal part of an artificially created compositional organism as a pattern, functionality, logic, and delegating historical reminiscences (decor - decoration) to the content component, the author creates an objective assessment of the architectural object, different from subjective preferences and preferences.
